I think a notification would be fine. Just something smaller and much less in the middle of the screen. This way you know if you put it on by accident.

The only problem with this is that the 1950s area is actually quite small. Going back wouldn't really work because once you get to the boundaries it would just be empty space. Because it was only meant for the intro missions so it's not a fully developed city like steelport. Cool idea though...
