Is it possible to play online at all?

I dont know if I am posting this in the wrong place but...

I am wondering if there is any way that me and my friend could play saints row 2 together online on the PS3..I understand that the gamespy servers shut down but I hear that LAN play is still possible...but me and my friend are in complete different places...is it possible to use something such as a virtual LAN over the PS3 so me and my friend could play together online? (while not being connected to the same network) I hope I am making sense.
 
evolve claims to be compatible with playstation 3 but installing it on your ps3 may get your account banned meaning you cant play online ever again on that system so download it at your own risk.

if you go to evolve's website psn is listed in the list as compatible.
 
Does anyone want to play saints row 2 multiplayer with me via evolve?
