Melee combat in saints row has taken a real downward turn since 2 hasn't it? Only a few kinds of weapons available, all using the same stock "swinging a long object" animation. And I like the finisher moves as much as anyone but otherwise using your fists as a weapon just isn't as satisfying.
I remember in 2 I'd use melee weapons ALL THE TIME because it felt satisfying to just clock a bastard in the head with a blunt object. In 3/4, I barely ever use melee weapons.
It's in my opinion that making melee more viable and varied, will exponentially improve the depth of combat in general and the player's ability to express their unique Boss/Prez through gameplay. I mean what's the point of a set of medieval armor if you don't have some fun sword swingin' to do?
Plus it'll just be more fun.
What we need is some serious overhauls. Like adding in more varied attack methods, such as making the Beam katana more WOOSH SLASH WAAA rather than just 'baseball but but sharp and glowy'. Some actual combos and shizz.
And we are in dire need of some sword variety. Regular katanas, Rapiers, Pirate cutlassed, FLAMING BROADSWORDS.
We could bring back Bigger, slower melee weapons like sledgehammers and shit. And hand to hand fighting, needs to be faster, needs to have more MMPH to it. We have superpowers right, so punching the shit out of aliens deserves to be a viable option.
And you could compensate for the Melee focus by having a more rapidifre but comparitively weaker Blast power BUT IM DIGRESSING. Melee is meh, we must make melee M-FUCK YEAH
But...
There is one thing above all others that saints row IV sorely lacks.
DIVE KICKS.
None of this 'hitting the ground with your FIST' malarky. I want the attack of a REAL hero. A flying kick that destroys all in it's path. Plus my created Zubaz just isn't complete without it.
