why would you want to turn the shadows off there's nothing wrong with them there fine.

The lighting is mostly controlled by the "time of day" files, which end in ".todx". Here's a tweaked day_tod_override, which isn't an option on the menu; it's named to replace "classic", but you can rename it to replace any you like (if you find the list). I altered it to reduce fog.yes. turning off ao worked. i feel silly for not thinking of that. thanks.
i find that the lighting is still dark and dreary. i would still like to mess with a .xtbl file that controls the light brightness and how it effects objects. maybe even make it look like a nice sunny day.
