Performance anxiety

I thought I read somewhere that IdolNinja has already talked about the performance of SRIV compared to SRIII, but I just can't find it, so please forgive me for asking again.

I've had SRIV pre-ordered for xbox since it was listed, but with the amazing stuff you crazy modders are doing I'm really thinking about ordering it for the PC. Thing is, I'm a little worried that all the extra stuff in the environment will be too much for my PC.

I'm running Windows 8 on a 2.67GHz i7 with 6 gigs of RAM and an Nvidia GTX 260 (I was going to upgrade the card this past month, but $1200 dollars worth of plumbing work kicked that plan in the balls).

Right now I can run SRIII at decent quality and a decent FPS, but it's close, with the occasional bit of slowdown, usually when flying around the streets on a hoverbike.

I know we can't really get any big dirt on the game yet, but I was hoping someone can help me out in enough time that I can change my pre-order if PC is a workable option. So, any hints? :)

Your CPU sounds decent enough, a 2.67Ghz i7 is old but it's still an alright CPU, RAM is just fine, but your GPU is the bare minimum listed on the store page. I'd upgrade the GPU or be prepared to dial down the settings quite a bit to get good performance. Says a 560 is recommended, which isn't a great card but it's good enough to run most games nowadays, had one myself until I upgraded to a 670. You could get the 560 for less than a hundred I bet, or go one better and get the 560 Ti which is the improved version of the card, eBay has a buy it now on that one for 150.

That is, assuming you're willing to spend the funds to upgrade. If not...well, from what Idolninja said you'll probably get similar performance now to what you get in SR3, but considering that you'll be running around in super speed and such a lot of the time and the VTOLs supposedly go faster you might end up experiencing quite a bit more slowdown than during a typical game of SR3 for you.

Idol said that SRIV runs BETTER than SRTT so if you're ok with the performance you get in 3, then you should be happy with 4.

Better for him on his setup, true. But each computer is different and the minimum requirements for 4 are actually listed as quite a bit higher than 3. It's worth being a bit cautious anyways, IMO.

Idol's got a relatively dated PC - not as good as the OP's.

Huh, yea, I just looked at Idol's specs from the press preview, that's ridiculous. I wonder why they'd list the minimum so high if it's capable of running full speed on the minimum settings at a decent resolution (1680x1050, I believe Idol runs at?)

I did a bit of research and it seems like the GPU Idol has is just a tiny bit faster than the 260, though. At least at default clocks, anyways. I'd also like to ask the OP what settings he's running The Third at, out of curiosity.

I can also confirm that it runs like a dream on my PC. I'd be disappointed if it didn't. ;)

Thanks for all the replies so far, guys. I'm tentatively hopeful that I might be able to get SRIV for PC at launch instead of waiting for a new video card and a Steam sale!

Here's my settings:
Resolution: 16oo x 900 fullscreen (though native is 1920 x 1080)
Anti-Aliasing: 4x MSAA
Filtering: Aniscropic 2x
Scene: Med
Lighting: High
Shadow: Med
Reflections: Low
Post-Processing: High
Ambient Occlusion: Low
V-Sync: No

I can tear through town on a Kenshin with only the occasional stutter at a busy intersection when I make a sharp turn. Things are pretty smooth otherwise, even with lots of stuff blowing up. Some teensy slows, but nothing with an extended duration or ever actually unplayable. I should also mention that while I run SRIII with default clocks, thanks to Nvidia Inspector and Skyrim, I have my overclocking sorted too.

My gut feeling is that you will be just fine. Better than fine, actually.
