Saints Row 2, fixing it

Hello.

Just throwing it out there...

Why not release the source code to the console version of SR2 on GitHub? Is there really anything significant in the aged code that's worth being protective about? What would be the reservations towards doing such a step?

Here's how I'd see it:

  1. Volition release the code (license TBD) to GitHub
  2. Someone outside of Volition makes an OSX, and or LINUX port (or whatever change)
  3. Volition cherry pick the changes, and merge back to GitHub
  4. new build goes to Steam/Origin/uPlay etc
  5. repeat till game is essentially "done" (as in, nobody can think of more patches)

It's just an idea, and also, I think the work done fixing SR2 is noble work. None of the above is meant to denigrate those advances.

edit: advance/advances.

I take it you mean the PC version. I don't know the answer to your questions. Just bear in mind this discussion must focus on the PC version, because this forum won't host discussion on console modding and whatnot.

Also, since this thread isn't about a tool release, I'll move it to the... uh... "mod" requests forum, I guess.

Hi,

no, I meant the xbox360 codebase, in order to produce a game binary, and then Volition/Deep Silver use that as the PC codebase going forward. I asked for that, because as far as I can tell, the original Windows port code is lost. With that being the state of play, releasing the original console source might be an option for the PC community to maintain the game going forward.

And yes, this probably should be moved... probably to "Ask Volition", as it would be one for them to look into.
