Saints Row crashing randomly (Blackscreen/Minimizing/Application stopped working)

Hello everyone,

I just bought the game and unfortunately I have encountered random crashes, where the game
minimizes or switches to a black screen (the audio continues, also the game still recognizes
keyboard input as I can hear the menue sounds when hitting escape). As soon as I then hit Alt-Tab I
switch back to the desktop and get an "Application stopped working" error.
As I already said, those crashes seem to be completely random, though they seem to happen much more
often during NPC interactions (like conversations via Comm inside the simulation or cutscenes) but
that might be just a feeling.

After the last crash I started digging though my system logs, so I maybe find a rough order of
events and it seems to be the following:
(This is a more or less rough translation, as my Windows is in German an so are my log files)

System Specs are:

OS: Windows 7 64-bit
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 3.40 GHz
RAM: 16 GB DDR3 1600 MHz
MAINBOARD: Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3
GRAPHICS: Gigabyte nVidia GeForce 460GTX
GRAPHICS DRIVER VERSION: 320.49
DIRECTX: 11

What I've tried so far:

Cleaning my computer and removing dust, removal of old Thermal Compound from my GPU to exclude
overheating problems, cleaning the pins of my graphics card with isopropyl alcohol, tried three
different graphics driver versions (326.80 (Beta), 326.19 (Beta) and the one I am currently
running, 320.49 (latest WHQL certified driver)). DirectX is up-to-date as far as I can tell. I am
currently running the application as an admin. Also I turned of my anti virus for the time I wanted
to play (avast!)

I hope someone knows a solution to this or, if it's a bug, it help volition to pin down, what's causing it.

It came back after the latest patch.. :(

I have a question, though it may seem silly. Did it run the first time installer?
For a good day or two, I was slamming my head against the wall trying to get past the "Girl who hates the 50's" glitches. I tried lowering all of my settings first, since doing so usually helps anything freezing. Then I switched from fullscreen to windows because it helps some games. I attempted valiantly to run my event logger, only to realize that a few registry files somehow got messed up (attempted to fix most of them). I then, similarly to you, it seems, did everything I could think of on my end. The cleaning, the drivers, even ran DirectX and .NET updaters to make sure they were current. Then, it occurred to me: SRIV never ran the first time install.

So, I ran the vcredist files in %installdir%\SteamApps\common\Saints Row IV\_CommonRedist\vcredist\2010\ folder. Both versions (as I am also on Windows 7 x64) and chose the repair option.

Not saying it's a fix all. But I got through that part, and then got to enjoy completing the final chapter and running around for challenges for about 20 minutes before it randomly crashed to desktop again. Might be worth looking into, as it was the only variable I changed that actually made it SRIV more stable.

Good luck!

As for the first question: It *should* be up-to-date, since I just activated the Key on Steam yesterday and downloaded it and it has never happened to me, that Steam would download an old version :)

@Sikotik13 : If I remember correctly it ran the installer after I started the game for the first time, but just for the sake of trying I'll try to repair the vcredist installations. After that I'll verify the game cache again (forgot to add that to my list of things already tried).

If it keeps crashing I'll now write down what I was doing when it crashed.

Fun fact: I just started my computer and went to the event log and found two more errors for the Saints Row Inauguration Station, that popped up without even touching Steam oO

I lied, in retrospect. I remembered reading somewhere about turning off peripheral software, so I closed out of mine (logitech gaming software for me), and that got me past the final mission freezing up.

Darned memory always failing me. Might help too.

Okay, I repaired the vcredist installations this morning, verified the game cache again (without receiving any errors, so I think it was already fine) and deactivated the Logitech Gaming Software (I happen to have exact the same software as you for my Logitech Mouse and my Logitech Gaming Keyboard :D).
Could play for several hours now without crashing - after I done with the other stuff I have to do now, I'll try to play again, this time with the Logitech Software turned on. I wonder if this really is the cause.
