I was re-playing SRIV at a friend's home today and I was at the mission where you have to assemble all key parts for the simulation. Gat's chopper catches fire and crash lands on a dock where we hold the LZ and defend it from being too hot until Shaundi flows in with one of the backup choppers and rendezvous with us there. That was when I noticed Shaundi interrupting over the radio,"Don't worry, I will be there before something else happens. I won't let anything happen to Johnny... er... both of you."
It was kinda insulting to me since it didn't sound like an obvious joke. Also, the respect and sensitivity of the various crew members towards each-other varies to a confusing level. For instance, Asha is more jealous of Shaundi and Pierce than Kinzie/Keith/King. Matt is usually generous towards everyone ever since he got his second chance (when Killbane and the Boss let him live in the 3rd installation). King has ego issues (at the end of the mission King of Stilwater where you rescue him from his simulation), but certainly less than Keith (when Zinyak lures him into the false promise of making him the President and he betrays the Saints). And Kinzie is so damn unpredictable at times (when Matt and her decide to reveal it to the Boss that saving Gat isn't such a good idea after all and after the mission 'The girl who hates '50s' in which you're required to kill Cyrus and rescue Kinzie thereafter). The only character who seems un-bothered by all this politics going in the crew and at the end of the day is worth rolling with me is Fun Shaundi. Honestly, she doesn't seem to give two flying fucks about this whole situation and I kinda regret not having her in the crew itself... kinda.
Going back to the original topic, I was more than convinced that Volition have upped the stakes with Saints Row IV and hence have implied the relation between Shaundi and the Boss by showing Shaundi as his/her wife in Boss' original '50s simulation. After all, everyone were trapped in their simulations based on the shadows of their own subconsciousness:
- Kinzie's simulation was all about the evil government thug Cyrus Temple.
- Matt's simulation was all about his fear of Killbane.
- Benjamin King's simulation was all about his fear of Tanya & Tony taking over and killing him.
- Pierce...pfft! Well his was all about the Saints Flow mascots killing him, particularly one 'Paul'.
- Asha's simulation was all about fighting the Boss' evil twin who kills her implied love interest Matt.
- Johnny's simulation was all about fighting Jyunichi who had killed her love interest Asha.
and finally,
- Boss' simulation was all about his beloved fellow Americans turning against their own President. But prior to that, we saw that the Boss and Shaundi have supposedly settled down together.
But consider this:
- Shaundi was really shocked to hear gun shots when Johnny Gat was busy doing "his thing" in Phillpe's aircraft and she's been pissed ever since. (SRTT)
- She bashes Pierce for throwing party despite the fact that Gat was supposedly murdered in the aircraft. (SRTT)
- Her voice logs spread throughout the city also make it clear how sad she was due to Gat's death. (SRIV)
- Shaundi's simulation was all about her fear of Gat's death and the guilty that she left him there to die. (SRIV: Back by popular demand)
- Until Gat has been rescued, her ideal animation in the Crib Ship is set to tensed and/or guilty like (sitting on the railing). Surprisingly, this changes when you rescue Gat and she seems to take more interest in her surroundings after that. You never see her sitting in that pose ever again.
The sixth cue is what this thread's all about. To recall, Shaundi says, "Don't worry, I will be there before something else happens. I won't let anything happen to Johnny... er... both of you."
Could this possibly mean we're dealing with a light-hearted love triangle here LOL!?
