unable to do co-op or MP

Hello, me and my brother are unable to do multiplayer in SR2, we simply can not see eachother's games, I am on windows 7 64-bit and he is on windows 8.
 
Do you both have the exact same version of the game? i.e. did you both buy it on Steam? Also, are you sure that one of them isn't the censored German version?
 
we both live in Australia (in the same house), it is not the german version, was bought on steam and we have no mods installed. I remember reading elsewhere that different OS's can cause such an issue, is this possible?
 
If either of you have Hamachi installed, try to temporarily disable it. SR2 will always try to use the virtual network adapter if it's installed, even if Hamachi isn't active.
