Will side missions be story missions again?

So I just want to preface this by saying I don't want this post to be overly negative. Yes I was super disappointed in SRTT and as such I am rather jaded and looking at IV with some suspicion and cynicism.

Having said that the marketing for the game is starting to melt my resistance and I am on the edge of buying the game or not. I thought over of things that really bothered me about SRTT and I think I know what worries me the most (aside from the writing. That probably deserves its own thread.)

Side missions. More specifically side missions used as filler to pad the length of story mode. This drove me absolutely nuts in the last game. It felt lazy and cheap especially after such a strong opening. They just went on and on and I kept thinking... "After this the story will pick up for sure!" That didn't happen and while I had fun they REALLY outstayed their welcome.

So how does SRIV compare? Do any of the previews give us any indication about this? I'm really leery of jumping in to a space epic just to play trafficking missions.

Side missions? There are quests in SRIV. Unless you mean the activities forced into missions, then yes, there are. Blazing is forced into the first mission you get superpowers.

Yeah I meant activities I'm sorry about the confusion. Still having them in story missions is worry but expected early on. I'm more worried about the ratio of activities vs actual fleshed out missions.

I mean it felt like the majority of SRTT was activities shoehorned into the story.

I see, well I believe that Blazing is the only one, at least that I know of.

From what we've seen so far, unlike in SRTT where the entire mission was just an activity, in SRIV there's an actual, fleshed out mission, with only a part of it being Blazing.

I believe that in one of the gameplay/interview videos this question came up and the answer was negative. They don't force you to drive a tiger around this time (even though tigers are awesome) or any of that.

Damn, why can't I remember the dev's name? It was in one of those hour+ videos, but I can't even recall which one. My brain is like a sieve. :p

Well that makes me feel much better. I know most of the issues with SRTT were out of Volition's hands for one reason or another but it really did put me off the game.

Very happy to see this change.

Well, I'm not happy about some of the aspects I've seen and heard about SR4 either. In particular the whole super powers stuff turns me off major. I'm hoping
for at least free form mode I can mostly choose to ignore using said powers and just go back to being a lunatic with a gang and gun. I'm hoping mods will let me tune the game
proper.

That is why I was planning on NOT buying SR4 on release as of a month ago anyway.
However I have seen they are really working with the community here and seem to be quite serious about supplying tools that will be quite powerful and allow
for some much more detailed mods for SR3 that they plan to move over to SR4 in time. I'm sure you all know about that , right? That is why we hang out here.!

So, despite my concerns and somewhat non interest in key 'features' of SR4, I'm tossing full bore Steam retail cash at them, less my mighty SR3 owner preorder discount,
just to support them. I loved Sr3 despite some issues and with mods I like it even more. (Cant' comment much on SR2 as I've not played it mch I started with SR3 and worked backwards).
So, thats my thought, just figured it isn't worth 'punishing' them and waiting six or 8 months down the road for heavy discounts.

Oh, and to try and be on topic, yea some of that mission stuff in SR3 was not my cup of tea. Some of it was though. I didn't force myself to do any I really did not like much.
No need to.

Edit, I thought I' mention for the record. Funny thing is I free roamed so much
the first two times I ran the core game... to the end.. I was maxed out on all 'specs' and perks
LONG before I actually finished the game. I mean like less than half way thru the core missions.
LoL. I just free roamed too much.
I expect I'll be able to do in Sr4 much as I do in SR3, mostly free roam and muck around, once I did the core game 2 times over. Once unmodded, then modified.
