Unable to load or start new game

I played SR2 back in July, and it worked fine, now I can't start or load any game. Whenever I select the 'continue' or 'new game' options in the main menu the game instantly crashes, with an access violation error (screenshot attached).

I am on Windows 10, Steam version. As far as I know nothing on my PC has changed since I last played.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling. I've tried both with and without GOTR, with and without DXVK 2.4, with and without SR2: Juiced.

I have no idea what to try now. Any ideas?

I had not knowingly updated any drivers, or made any changes to my PC since the game last worked. I have updated my drivers now, but still getting the same error.

I've tried disabling the Steam overlay, compatibility mode, run as admin. Nothing has worked.

I'm sorry to say that this might require a windows reinstall. Forgive me if you have already tried this. I am not certain if
you mean that your have uninstalled and reinstalled the game or if you mean that you have reinstalled windows.

I'll admit I'm guessing right now but it's possible that system restore, or whatever its called on Windows 10, may have silently replaced a system dll or something from it's file cache.

I'm a linux user and only run 7 for gaming so I'm sorry if I don't have the folder names correct.

I would imagine he meant reinstalling the game. I can't imagine the issue's that bad that it would require a full Windows reinstall.

Have you tried downgrading any drivers? (I'm no PC expert btw.)

@7BSamuel had a similar issue recently, and that was on Windows 11. The fact that you're experiencing this without modding your game since you last played at least rules out mods causing the problem. Maybe it's something to do with Steam? (I play on GOG, so I might not know how to help with that.)
My advice would be to try installing the usual laundry list of fixer mods like Juiced Patch and (if your goal is true vanilla) the "Boring edition" of GOTR. If you're on Steam you could also sail the seven seas of the internet and track down a SR 2 GOG .exe (I didn't even know that was a thing until the video I linked in my original post told me you could do that lol). Additionally, you could always try nuking your directory and reinstalling/verifying the integrity of the files.

My not relevant two cents on this:
Having reinstalled Windows before over the years let me tell you it is an absolute pain in the ass to go thru, especially if you've been using your build of Windows for a few years at this point, what with the amount of stuff you'll need to track down and reinstall, reconfigure settings, remembering old passwords, reactivate licensed software, etc etc. especially if you mess up and delete all files without a proper backup. And a lot of the time in my experience, reinstalling Windows won't even fix the issue in question which leaves you with the regret of knowing it wasn't Windows's fault in the first place, and you nuked your shit for nothing. I highly suggest not reinstalling Windows unless you've exhausted literally every other option imaginable and have no other path forward, and you have literal days to spend at your computer. At best, you could always try a system restore point as another comment suggested. especially if you're updating drivers.

Take this advise I learned over the years, avoid playing video games on a onboard graphics card they suck, better yet get yourself a Nividia or a AMD graphics card your games will thank you.
