I'm getting a new graphics card what do you think?

Hello.

Since we're all talking about graphics card here, I'm curious about one thing. How do you look at a graphics card and know which one is stronger than the other? Is it that the higher the numbers in the series mean it's stronger? For example, between "GeForce GT 625M" and "GeForce GT 555M" which one is stronger?

Thanks.

GT555M. Although I wouldn't recommend gaming on any of those two cards. The first number is the generation. Obviously the 600 series are newer than 500 series. To determine what card is stronger, you take a look at the remaing two numbers. For example:

A GTX690 is stronger than a GTX780, but, a GTX780 is stronger than a GTX680. Please note that there's a big difference in performance between the 500 and 600 series (although the 555M is stronger than the 625M).

Ignore the numbers model numbers have nothing to do with perfomance look up the specs of the card and compare them to recomended specs for games to work out what kind of specs you would need :p

- Thanks for the informative replies everyone.

Model numbers are really weird. With ATI, it's usually the 2nd number to watch out for.

I also like this site a lot, and here's an example of a higher model number card being much less powerful:

- Definitely thank you very much for that website, makes my life easier to look at those whole lot of damn graphics card that exists.

It's best to look at the specs. Video Memory, and cuda cores give you a decent range of the power of the card. In this case the GT 555M is easily more powerful. As far as Model numbers the first number represents the series number: 600 series, 500 series. The last two numbers are it's model number. The higher the better generally. Each series generally has a minor performance boost from the last series but rarely enough to eclipse a higher model number with in a single generation.

Generally anything under X50 is a low end card, so it takes several generations before a lowend card can replace a lowend from a past generation....I hope this helps.

With Nvidia, if the name starts with GT and then the number, it will be a fairly low end card. You will want the GTX versions as they are more geared for gaming.

That's basically true but GT _50's are usually pretty good budget gaming cards. GT 450 was excellent, and still can get the job done for pretty damn cheap. However, it's certainly a safe bet to error on the side of GTX. The GTX ti releases are generally legendary. GTX 550 ti, and the GTX 650 ti boost. Amazing cards......I have no idea about mobile cards though. Personally I run a duel core laptop with an old as hell AMD Radeon, and I then OC it through the freak'n roof! It played SRTT on medium to high settings....which is amazing since it barely played it on lowest settings un OC'd.
