My thoughts on SR:GOOH

"The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated."
- Mark Twain

It certainly isn't the direction I would have picked for the next game but I am willing to at least play it first before passing judgement on it.

The Hell isn't the best setting in my opinion but I like every Game with Superpowers! So...
Shut up and take my money!

I'll just post TLDR summary and not bother with expansive explanation of my feelings.

Never again. Not after being lied to on pre SR4 release about wonderful things in the future regarding PC mod support.
Never again will I pre-order from Volition any product they bray about . I had doubts I would fully enjoy SR4 pre-release, bought it
pre-release based on braying announcements from various quarters about wonders to come for PC community, and found out

I was right, the game let me down greatly from SR3. The ONLY saving grace , to be honest, SR4 was the mod community HERE
that fixed the game up as best they could to make it playable and enjoyable.
It was almost as good as SR3 in some regards, once modded correctly.
SR3 was great, but again, it only truely shined once modded. YEah, and who did all that? Was it anyone from Volition? No, I don't think so, that
was all done by great talented fans of the game and with support of a excellent supporting forum here at this site.

So how do I feel about SR5.
Not good, and I won't be considering it at all until well after release. From what I see at present, it will just enrage me and I can't forget
what was said over a year ago by Volition regarding great support of mod community.
So, I won't be shilling for them out of stupid ignorance fan-boyism ever again on forums elsewhere or here.
You taught me that.

Yah, that was the TLDR summary.

Funny, my thoughts follow the same tune, but with a very different tone:

Never again. Not after being lied to on pre SR4 release about wonderful things in the future regarding PC mod support.
Spoiler: the modding SDK they promised is coming. I'm not sure how taking longer than they expected qualifies as a lie.

My problem is that Gat Out of Hell is that Gat and Kinzie are the only playable characters. With the boss out of the picture, Volition missed the perfect opportunity to make every Saint a playable character in this. Instead of choosing from Shaundi, Pierce, Asha, Gat, Kinzie, or Benjamin King, we can only choose from Gat or Kinzie. Sure, there will be mods for the PC version, but it's not the same, and besides, not everyone plays on PC.

Forcing players to play as GAT and Kinzie is biggest mistake imo....Playing as your own chracter makes SR different from other urban open world games but now it's just like other urban open world games....

If this continues in SR5 then this franchise is dead for me...

Spoiler: the modding SDK they promised is coming. I'm not sure how taking longer than they expected qualifies as a lie.

Ehhh......I think the problem is that a hand full of dedicated employees cannot really give the "mod support" people were/are expecting. I think Uzi in many ways is correct. Sure, Volition isn't all together lying about mod support.....but I think they are making promises they cannot keep. It's been a bad habit they picked up from SR 3. They released SR 3 and though it was fun it was noticeably smaller scale than previous games. They said that moving to the new engine made them have to focus more on a smaller area, blah blah blah. SR 4 had much hype as being the massive follow up.....and was mainly reused assets from SR 3. I agree that both games were fun to play, but it taught Volition the art of delaying the inevitable. SR 3 suffered because THQ was running out of money and needed a sure hit so Volition patched the game of partially finished and shipped it (Volition are GODS at polishing unfinished games. Seriously. There are bizarre unfinished sections in SR 3 that make no sense, but you'll never notice.) As things got worse they were forced to make another game out of the already unfinished content from SR 3. I doubt they said, "Hey, let's just retexture some assets and call it good!" No. THQ needed more money, and they needed it fast. The only people they could turn to was Volition. They whip up a pretty decent game in a very short time....but not short enough. THQ tanks, and Volition is bought by Deep Silver.....who's philosophy is shockingly similar to THQ. SR 4 ships......it's good, but.....not really what anyone wanted. It's short, and is over way too early. Now I feel this is the norm. Volition will rush out sequels or tie ins endlessly until the franchise collapses. Not because they are bad people or anything, but because they are always under the knife. I believe that Volition is one of the greatest developers in the business, but they are working under conditions which are not conducive to Sandbox development. "Gat Outta Hell" to me, is painful to see. I feel that the franchise has lost all grasp of their fanbase at this point. We giggled at purple dildos and now the game is nothing but purple dildos. Not because they want the game to be one long dildo joke, but because it's fast and cheap.

In short: I don't want to see SRV within the next 3-4 years.
It's not exactly about what I want, but I'm quite certain I'm not the only one thinking this.
The Saints Row franchise is getting painful critique by a decent amount of passionate fans, just because they had to make it a rush-job without having time to make the game something awesome, twice now... wait, trice. We modders take the effort to polish the last things Volition didn't get the time for to polish up and smoothen out. And some of us even are doing their best to get more out of the game (Sandbox+ for example), even if it pushes the limits (NPC Behaviour and Spawn, or my attempt to bring a great amount of variety in traffic (normal cars, cop cars, gang cars)). We do it because we love the series, even with the 5 huge steps back from Saints Row 2 onwards.

It's saddening to see what sofar has come out of their big bucket of promises, it's also saddening that it's the second game I'm experiencing this in (APB:Reloaded has the same kind of issues, but probably a few steps worse, because terrible engine, terrible exploitative community, all to be controlled by a 30-man developing group, and a handful of moderators, testers, and mentors).
But I'll keep waiting.
Saints Row to me was the first open world sandbox game that was actually enjoyable to play, and it's still is the most enjoybale one.
Maybe offtopic, but I still wonder what made Volition decide to make every weapon with a grip like they did on the K8-Krukov. Though it could be the same reason -- a lack of time.

Um... So it's rated 16+? :O
