Observations about Saints Row (the original)

Because Volition wants to make SR "whacky" and unfortunately they believe the only way to do that is to take a chainsaw to the games story, gameplay and open world design. (I still think SR4 and GOOH are the weakest of series, especially SR4 since it has the most bland and ugly sandbox I have ever seen)
I really hope that's not true. I know it seems that way from the last couple games, but I hope it's mainly because of the big distraction with losing THQ and moving to Deep Silver. There's long lead times to any game of this complexity, and instability at the company can make it really hard to concentrate on a long term project. Now that it's settled and Deep Silver is in control, I'm hoping they can really focus now, and the next game will be more of the caliber of the older games.

There's no reason Saints Row can't be both "whacky" and have detailed and interesting open world. Honestly, the older games were still whacky -- a bit less so -- but also had interesting worlds. Even Saints Row 1, which was frequently compared to GTA, was much more whacky than GTA, which is why I like it so much! :)

EDIT: I love the graphical realism of the Saints Row world and character models, and I would not like it nearly as much if it didn't seem so realistic. A realistic open world design makes it feel so much more immersive, which allows me to believe the wacky things that happen and identify with the characters.
