1- It's not that they'll forget about it, it's that they will actively ignore it, just like how Rockstar ignored the 10th anniversary of GTA VCS.
2- Volition will be too busy making post launch content for Dead Island 2 and moving over to work for future projects at Gearbox to even send a single intern to finish the patch.

I know my guess is kinda unlikely to be true. Wish in one hand, s**t in the other, yes, but please let me have my "I have a dream" moment.
