The developers simply cut out the feature rather than replacing it.
In SR3 the buttons are missing, SR4 crashes if one tries to access the features (lousy port, really ... shame on you, voliton/deep silver/whoever).

The GOG versions have zero to do with the developer or publisher, other than being given the game files. GOG does whatever they want with it with no input from us.

So they actually got the source code to remove multiplayer and steam copy protection? SOMEONE had to do that. Nice.

So instead of jumping to saving the characters then reloaded the game it's best to have it in-game custom character selection like the next-gen haves
