Have you ever sat down playing saints row the third and said "WTF? why is the boss a comical bad-ass inSR3 when in SR2 they where a my way or the highway lunatic? how did their personality just change outta no where?"
well i'm here to answer this.
Firts, read this summary on saints row total control and undercover:
BUT WHAT IF THEY DIDN'T?
what if the main character of saints row the third to gat outta hell is not the boss but the boss' cousin?
thsi explains why the boss' simulation in 4 wasn't about carlos' death. if this was the real boss than they probably would've relived carlos' death. how could you not be traumatized by something like carlos' death, even someone as phsycopatic as the boss couldn't.

after these two spin-off titles we're lead to belive the boss returned after their disappearance...saints row total control is based after the events of Saints Row 2, the Boss has gone missing and their cousin has taking over as temporary leader for the saints.
Saints row undercover is about an undercover cop who infiltrates the Saints to find out more about the civil war going on inside the Saints whiles the Boss is missing.
