The Modding News Destined to Change Everything

Sadly, probably not. For now we will be focussing on getting you guys information and helping to improve modding tools in general. If we get to where doing workshop integration makes sense and have the time to do it, then we would certainly look at it.
wow. Was just jesting, basically vocalizing a dream; but this doesn't quite sound like 'ha, no' to me ;)

Lets hope Saints Row 4 wont take all the gamers from Saints Row 3 o:
At least it won't take me for a while, pc won't run 4 worth a dime

nice to see Kotaku is still doing shit all for research
Well, Kotaku.
They even got the info about how you met with Volition wrong.
Logan Booker on Kotaku said:
Recently, the fellow behind Saints Row 2 modding blog Idol Ninja Games dropped Volition an email, requesting information on the game’s various internals, not expecting much in the way of a reply. However, the response he received was not only prompt, but encouraging and extensive.
Hey, Logan? Kotaku? Great to see you covering news as big as this, but didn't you actually read the article at all? Here's what the actual explanation was, ripped right from the blog post:

While I was in LA playing Saints Row IV, I took the opportunity to lay out a modding proposal to the Volition guys.
I don't mean to rant here, but if you are going to do online journalism, do some goddamned research and actually read what you are reporting on so you don't look like a jackass.

...

 Anyways, glad to see the news is spreading, Idol. Makes me all the more pumped for future developments.

Meh, good old Kotaku, right? lol This one got me too:

Volition has stepped into Rockstar territory

Bad way of putting it, I get the point being made, but Rockstar practically hates modding, more so after Hot Coffee, even going out of their way to break the game if modded post-patch by any normal methods. But you know, GTA Tinted Glasses =\ (I don't know about IV much though.)

But hey, at least news is spreading! Pretty cool, I'm sure once the forum talent starts pumping out even better mods than before, we'll see more news crop up on it. Such an exciting time!

Actually, to be fair, before Hot Coffee hit Rockstar loved modding, and actually back in the DMA days released their formats and info so people could custom-mod GTA1 and 2 (including level designs and so on). In GTA3 they kept a number of formats the same and I think assisted some of the modders to get the other bits of the 3d stuff down so they could continue to work. In fact, GTA 3, VC, and SA are probably the best examples of that, where the PC versions are far superior to the console ones, not just for modding but for unmodded features.

Then the Hot Coffee scandal broke (which was totally their own fault, if you don't want the modders you've previously encouraged finding your almost-done 'risque' minigame, DON'T LEAVE IT IN THE CODE DISABLED BY A SIMPLE BINARY FLAG!) and the first thing they did was blame the modders because it's that or admit they had actually left the stuff in the game all but ready to go.. effectively severing all ties with modding and throwing them under the bus. They changed the code so it couldn't be easily modded (the 1.1 patch for SA, that's pretty much all it did as well as removing the bits of HC code), and when GTA4 came out they were already openly hostile to modding to the point of using file checks multiple ways and constantly releasing little patches axing any of the used circumventions to make sure you can't do it.

It is kind of sad in a way, it's obvious that Rockstar influenced a lot of companies, and let's face it when people talk about the Saints Row series they call it a 'grand theft auto style game'. It's a compliment, the games take what GTA was and distilled it to purest essence, and ramped it up. Rockstar on the other hand went the other way, and in turn I never actually finished GTA4 because it just rubs me the wrong way. Too slow, the cars handle like boats, and it's all grimdarkmoody.

Of course, that's not to excuse any of the other problems with the Kotaku article, but at least the one point holds. Volition is moving intoi the old-school Rockstar territory. Makes sense. They already showed they can do that fun style of game better (as R* gave up and moved to more 'serious' GTA games) so now they'rer gonna show they can do the modding thing too :p

Heh, I like how almost all the articles are "Credits to PC Gamer" and "From PC Gamer" and "Thanks PC Gamer". It's the subtle way of saying "They scooped us big, but let's make sure people can read our article too"..
