I feel bad about Vogel

Even though this has been stated numerous times before the Boss often goes by the logic of "If you try to kill me or my crew prepare to end up in a casket somewhere". Although s\he has mellowed out in future installments. For example recruiting lieutenants from the other, often hostile factions or simply running the gang-leaders out of town instead of outright killing them as seen in SR3. As for Vogel wasn't he the guy that provided funding for the three gangs in SR2 to begin with? Thus albeit unintentionally leading to half the city getting burned down due to rioting (File in the Cake and Retribution) or bombings (Room Service, most of the Samedi missions) plus the deaths of hundreds of civilians, gang members and cops\Ultor Security (including several members of the Saints)? Another thing to consider is that he was likely the guy that convinced Dex to turn a sizable chunk of Ultors Rent-a-Cops into a secret police unit or as stated by Maero a "Private Army".

This "mellowing" the Protagonist went through and that so many people seem to applaud him for will most certainly be the Third Street Saints' downfall. The Boss turned from a competent leader and strategist who did not take shit from anyone (if Kinzie was in Saints Row 2 she would have been slaughtered worse than Jessica) to a passive "yes-man" whose planning capacity limits itself as "murdering as many people as possible". Leave that shit to Johnny Gat.

To be fair, the Boss did go from the no-nonsense 'Quit your whining and do what I say!' of Saints Row 2 to the light-hearted almost friendly Boss that we know today. The beating he/she gave Matt is probably the closest we've ever come to seeing the Boss physically lashing out on his/her own crew and it would've been something he/she would've done in Saints Row 2.

Could you really see the Boss from Saints Row 2 putting up with Kinzie's sarcastic snarks, or her flat out punching him/her when he/she made that comment about the poodle skirt? Granted I don't think Kinzie would've been killed by Saints Row 2 Boss, but she would not have been able to get away with it without some kind of consequence. This is the Boss that buried Shogo alive, the Boss that had Jessica crushed under a monster truck. If TV Trope's Nightmare Fuel page was embodied into a person, Saints Row 2 Boss would be that person. Even Shaundi looked scared when the Boss snapped at her for questioning why she had to deal with the Sons and not any of the other gangs.

Kinzie is extremely lucky the Boss mellowed out considerably. Matt's also lucky that a few punches to the face is all he got after stupidly blurting out that saving Gat was a terrible idea.

Conversely, though, you can run a group of people without being crazy in the head like Saints Row 2 Boss was. He/she allows the group to give him/her some flak, but they still answer to him/her.

I always thought the boss let Kinzie punch her because of the whole thing with earth being destroyed, and Kinzie losing Oleg and Viola, so I guess she needed somewhere to vent her frustration, and the boss recognized this. Also, since if it weren't for Kinzie, the boss would still be trapped in her 1950s nightmare simulation.
That's how I see it anyway.

I guess the boss mellowed out like you said after all the events after SR2's story and before SR3. This is a good thing, I like the "new" boss better than the more ruthless and crazy boss.
