late to the discussion but between playing SR4 and school haven't had much time. I definitely like the softer boss. (I was kind of pissed when s/he beat the crap out of Matt though, since he was only trying to help, okay he DID suggest that saving Gat was a bad idea but I can forgive him :/ yeah I have a soft spot for Miller :P) Really, volition made the boss more human, like in Asha's mind prison its revealed she thinks the boss is an unfeeling murderer (i.e evil you says you never shed a tear when Aisha was beheaded) at which the boss, more than slightly taken aback, says "is that what you think, Asha?" In my mind I just view it as the boss is what s/he has to be to get the job done and no matter what their friends think of them they truly care.

Some people just wanna watch the world burn want the Boss to be like them I guess. We're given all these customisation options, and in SR3 we were even given choices but then to see your creation acting in a way that doesn't match what you had in mind when you made them must be annoying for some people.

Just a warning I refer to boss as HER in this...
I mean, I played as female voice 01 in Saints Row 2, who was basically a gun nut with no remorse... and it kinda went with the main story's gang bangin' fo' respekk and 'take back da Row, yo' mentality. But in 3 I was happy to see my boss taking part in Professor Genki, wrestling a luchadore twice her size and raging that she's a toilet/sex doll. In 4 I think the best parts of the character shine through in the nightmare level cutscenes, I mean... that chat with Asha, the way she says to Ben lets not argue in front of the kids, consoling Shaundi, giving matt the courage to fight his fear... it was a good game, man.

It's definitely not short in character development (for boss...and maybe a few others :P ) :)

Really the game didn't start to pick up for me util Earth blew up. I loved the first mission, but the White Crib felt rushed, Pleasentville while funny was a bit short and the first bits of the sim where pretty meh. Then after Earth is destroyed the game just unleashed waves of feels at me with Shaundies nightmare, Matts fantastic rescue mission, going back to Stilwater, all of Gats mission, the "romance" between Gat and Shaundi, Pierce and Paul.

I cared about my hommies again, something that did not happen in Sr3, and I cared about my Boss again. The scene where Boss punches the crap out of Matt was probably my fav scene because it was just a high quality scene. We see a bit of the ruthless Boss poke it's head out while she wams on him because all she cares about is rescuing her best friend at any cost and Kinzie pretty much telling her to act like a leader. Also Shaundies LM was another great part because we at last see Shaundi come to terms with her past self and embrace it, and I kinda look at the Boss the same way. The Boss went from one extreme to another extreme(she was extremely ruthless in SR2 and extremely soft in Sr3) where in Sr4 she is both, while still soft she still has her ruthless old self peak out at certain moments. Big reason I liked the true ending was because when the Boss said "A friend told" me, I smiled because at last, the Boss had become a true leader. She was able to look past the betrayal and act liek a leader, showing more interest in her friends then just her self. It's not everyones desire mind you, but I was very happy.

I agree completely about the white house part was way to rushed. I would have liked time to be "the commander and cheif" not much but you know a breather before Zinyak arrives. Now I think of it, I never had any Homies with me in SR3 on free roam O_O but, I loved SR3 to death, as a political science major I loved the jokes and references Volition used (the list is rather large) I loved that Loren was poetically crushed by the tower counter balance and I'm liked that the Boss was able to look past blind revenge and do whats right rather then what feels good. I'm not sure what you mean when you say the boss was on the extreme of "soft" in SR3, they were pretty badass....not as badass as in SR4 but, thats hindsight talking :P

In SR3 I noticed that the Boss is brave. Extremely brave. He is not that kind of character that escapes frm danger, especially if the life of his friends is on the line.

While I didn't usually use them in free roam, I still felt a bond with them.

On a separate note, I have officially fallen in love with Saints Row because of the characters. I'm a writer (as a hobby), and just for fun when I first played SR:TT (my first SR game) I made my character the redheaded main character from one of my stories - and then the boss's personality fit my character's so perfectly, I was like O_O.

The general wackiness and ridiculousness felt like some of the things I had written in the past. It was (and still is) just so awesome - it kinda feels like a video game based on my character, and that feeling is wicked!

But back to discussion of the boss's personality, I absolutely agree with Scion of Llanowar. :)

Seeing as this is about the boss, I'll keep this part short - I felt like Johnny should have had deeper character development. I mean, come on, even in his romance scene, the boss showed more emotion than he did.
