SPOILERS Saints Row (2022) official info

I think folks might get attached to the new crew no problem given enough context and time, especially cus CG trailers for Saints stuff often aren't indicative of the actual game, such as 1's having the Saints originally green like Grove Street or 3's implying that Gat and Loren would live to see STAG.
Yeah, for all we know, the big build bald guy in the Panteros, who only had one line in the trailer, could be one of the main enemies that we see quite often throughout the story cutscenes... Or he could simply just be an enforcer for the Panteros. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Same here. I mean, I love the Saints Row franchise, but I’m afraid they shot themselves in the foot by saying this game was a new Saints Row rather than a brand new IP. This game looks somewhat decent on its own merit, and if they had said that it borrows heavily from other IPs including Saints Row such as gangs and customization, and actually shown it, I would’ve bought it. In fact, I think most of the hate its getting now wouldn’t even exist.

Instead they’re doing these expecting the name alone to carry the game along. When a lot of people are like, ‘This ain’t it, boss.’
For a while there, I thought I was the only one to think that way.
Yeah, I was disappointed, watching the trailer, that the new Saints aren't like how I might have originally imagined ... but, you know, I'm over 50. I see things that were in movies, books and games a long time ago that we didn't even think about at the time, but today just would be an embarrassment.
Just out of curiosity, are you thinking about specific stuff from the earlier game when saying that? Or is it just a way to say that no one from Volition actually knows what street gangs are about, like you said in your post: "write what you know"?
I don't like the fact that this person's all about realism and relevancy to real life problems when it comes to character motivations. But does a complete 180 when mentioning Marshall's laser rifles and flying bikes, as if it wasn't completely out of place and unrealistic.
However, I do agree with them on the fact that this game could have a great impact on the this genre and the industry as a whole if it succeeds, and that people like The Quartering will do everything they can to see it fail just because they are looking for a reason to get offended.
Now that I think about it. I don't really see the "Hipster" gripe people have with the SR reboot, as it seems mainly based off the Urkle-looking numbers guy of the team and the default main character that they used in the CG trailer, when in game she's shown much more casual.
Wearing a suit with rolled up sleeves and rolled up pants is pretty bad. I think his appearance and that of Kevin really left a bad taste in people's mouths. That's why they went with "hipster", I'd said it describes them fairly accurately.
Also I recently noticed that Kevin is wearing "Kevin Klein" boxer shorts. Seriously, fuck that guy.

Maybe they wanted to start a new game franchise, but they were afraid people wouldn't be interested because of the last time they tried it (AOM). So they still created the game they wanted, but kept the "Saints Row" title to try and draw people's attention?

Or maybe because their new concept had so many similar features to their Saints Row franchise, they thought, why not just call it a reboot?

Just a theory.

Okay, this one is actually easy to explain. The key word is "character". This is an issue of people vs things, characters vs laser rifles and flying bikes.

When we create mass media works like movies or games, we have to be very careful about people. For example, if I have a XYZ motorcycle, and in my movie, it's p.o.s, no problem. It's just a thing. BUT ... if I call it a Harley Davidson Motorcycle and THEN disparage it, the people at HD are going to have a problem with how I portray their work, their brand, their business. Which is why, when we have a flattering portrayal, we can get money for product placement. But if, for example, I'm going to crash an airliner, no airline company wants to be associated with crashing, so I have to make up a company. People.

Now with street gangs, we get into a problem, because there are street gangs made of people, people are complicated, and if I don't really understand street gangs or who they are or how they act or what their motivations are or why they got into it, I run the danger of stereotyping people: dehumanizing them with caricatures. When I was kid, I didn't care if I offended other people. Now, I care.

Some of the people who want to play games are at a point in their life where they don't care if how a group in a movie or game is portrayed is offensive to the people being portrayed. I understand that. I've been there. I get it.

My guess, though, is that the devs are most likely younger than I am, but maybe they're simply getting into that age bracket where they're starting to think about these things.

Unfortunately, to people who don't care, it looks weak. They look like sellouts, they look like they're caving to "pressure", they look like they're trying to be "woke", they look like they're projecting their hipsterism into a game where it doesn't belong.

If it were me making the game though: again, I wouldn't want to have to be apologizing to people.

I'll give you great example: Freckle Bitches. When they did SR2, I'm sure they thought it was funny. Everybody knows they're poking fun at Wendy's. What's wrong with that, right? Except the owner named the restaurant after his daughter, and the image on the sign was based on his freckled red-headed daughter when she was still a pre-teen. And so basically, without any real harm to real person intended, they just called some guy's little daughter a bitch.

Again, when we're a certain age, we may not care, but when we get older, sometimes we do.

So it's an unfortunate coincidence that the trailer is basically LGBTQ+ & POC vs Big Bad White Male?

LGBTQ+
Literally where? And the Panteras are most likely hispanic you seen the trailers and the very little gameplay for all we know especially given the setting, you're just baiting people.
