SPOILERS My experience with Saints Row IV.

Not really, the dildos in that game were static, IIRC. Saints Row 2's engine wasn't that great anyways, in terms of performance. My PC runs Saints 3 flawlessly as well as a ton of other games at near max settings but Saints Row 2 still stutters on occasion. Also if you want another good reason to update the engine besides better performance, since they coded the engine in-house they don't have to pay licensing fees to use it like with Havok or if they'd went with Unreal Engine. Also allows for better graphics, which they needed. We wouldn't have complained (much) but you can be sure that they'd get reamed by casual fans and critics for sticking with the same graphical style this close to the end of the console's lifespan when everyone else is putting out games with much better graphics. Not everyone can look past graphics and see the gameplay underneath (Even I, a non-graphics whore, sometimes lament the lack of good graphics in certain games...2D graphics can be timeless but bad/old 3D graphics look like shit)

SR2 for PC was a bad port that wasn't done by Volition, that's why it's still stuttering.

I know that, but that's not necessarily true either. Saints Row 2 PC is pretty glitchy sometimes but there's no guarantee that it'd run better if Volition coded it. I mean, the port was done by CD Projekt, wasn't it? Aren't they the guys who do The Witcher series? They can't be THAT bad at coding if they're the team I'm thinking of. Even then it's still a pretty old engine, and I mean....Rockstar coded their port of GTAIV themselves and look how that turned out. If V did SR2 PC themselves it's still no guarantee that it'd run better.

That would be true, except like you said, SR3 was done pretty well.... and it was done in house. In other words, you are implying that Volition could have ported SR3 to PC pretty well, but they could not have ported SR2 to PC pretty well. There's a logical fallacy here. Volition did port SR3 well (according to you), which had a new, untested engine, to PC pretty well, but they couldn't port SR2 well, because it had an older, tested engine?

chances are that the port was a rush job. IIRC a Volition member mentioned on here that they weren't even aware that a port was being done until THQ told them a few days before launch

I'll admit, I was fishing for reasons, but I believe the other points I made in my post prior to that still stand, then?

EDIT: And, now that I think about it, even then engine isn't everything and we have a bit of a precedent; Rockstar ported the GTA3 engine games to PC no problem but when GTAIV initially hit on PC the port was nowhere near the quality of the prior ports. Different engines have different quirks after all. But again, I was just fishing for reasons and I'll concede your point

Barely. It's a hypothetical point, but like I said, you found SR3 on PC to be a good port from Volition, but claim that Volition would not have necessarily made a good port out of SR2. The problem that idea is, they DID make a good port of SR3, so it's vague, as to what reasons you would have, to think Volition would not have necessarily make a good port of SR2.

By other points I meant the ones I made about licensing fees and graphics, I've already conceded you're likely correct about the performance bit.

I thought the graphics of SR2 were fine, and in some cases, are better than SR3's. However, as for licensing fees, I don't know if they created the engines themselves. CTG apparently stands for "Core Technology Group", which brings up several other companies on an internet search. If this engine was created by other people, they are still probably paying a license either way. However, there isn't a lot of info on the CTG engine, or who even created it.
